Software engineering is a complex human activity–both in terms of individual cognition and social dynamics in a team. In the tutorial at ISEC 2023, I will give a whirldwind tour of the various kinds of human-centered research in software engineering.
During the session, participants will:
- gain a broad overview of human-centered research questions possible in SE and frame their own for their projects,
- decide on possible methods they can adopt to answer their human-centered questions,
- learn the background to read and critically evaluate and interpret human factors research in SE,
- gain hands on experience with qualitative coding, and
- gather various useful “tips” for writing up human-centered SE research.
